In my practice I examine the relationship between light and shadow, and the dramatic effect it has on the human form. My portraiture is inspired by old masters and the Dutch Golden Age’s use of pigments and composition. I also enjoy photography, where my focus has been on how light paths can be manipulated with exposure changes. Both of these facets of my practice are heavily influenced by film, and my work directly utilizes elements of cinematography. When explored, direct parallels between Golden Age works and cinematic composition can be found, and my work seeks to visualize those connections. I look to capture a glimpse of my subject’s personality in each portrait, specifically through the eyes, further dramaticized by a dark, illuminated background.
In 2021 I received my BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
